The Wide Reach

The tired folk locked out from the confines of the City beat their dry fists against the gate, their voices hoarse from shouting. Eris pushed against the crowd with her elbows. She had to keep moving forward. She couldn’t stop. She couldn’t.

With a gasp, she finally emerged into the cold, crisp air of the night. Eris shuffled one foot forward, and then another, and broke into a slow jog. Every part of her body hurt. All she knew was to head northward towards the forest.
