King No One

“Can magic bring back those who’ve passed?” Eris asked.

The Beast’s shoulders stiffened as he drew himself up to his feet. “It requires a great deal of magic and willpower to break such a fundamental rule of nature. I tried it once, and I failed. I doomed them.”

“Do they live here, in this place?”

“No,” he said, tapping on his chest. “They are within me.”

“Could you show me?”

“No.” He moved away from her. “These were dear friends whom I loved until the end of their days. I treasure the life they swore to me, and no one — least of all a girl who only wants to justify bringing the dead back to life — deserve to lay eyes upon them.”
